Internship:
RMI Breakthrough Design Team

RMI's Breakthrough Design Team (BDT) looks comprehensively at critical operations to show our clients creative new ways to turn waste into profits. We closely examine everything you do—from the most basic aspects of a business model, facility, or product to the most complex industrial process details—to identify the synergies that connect seemingly unrelated functions. We design integrated solutions that address an array of energy, resource and business-related challenges at once, at modest extra cost—indeed, often at lower capital cost because simpler, leaner designs can make some equipment smaller or unnecessary. In fact, by applying RMI’s knowledge and resource saving techniques, client companies have reported resource savings of 30 to 50 percent on retrofit, more on new construction. What’s more, our team inspires profitable ingenuity throughout your organization.

RMI’s work is a mixture of contracting and longer-term grant work. An RMI intern’s work experience will also be a combination of the two.

Responsibilities:
  • Simulation and data studies for efficiency maximization in transportation;
  • Brainstorm new approaches to transportation or new alternatives;
  • Technical research and documentation supporting clean sheet design of vehicle systems;
  • Interpret client needs to create efficient low-cost solutions for vehicles and vehicle components;
  • Meeting minutes and input during videocons and trips;
  • Report reviewing and contributions of technical writing;
  • Interfacing with clients and potential partners, customers.

Qualifications:
Engineering student with some knowledge of complex motive or energy storage systems ideally involved with university demonstration programs (e.g., solar car, hybrid vehicles, etc.). Knowledge of and interest in efficient transport systems, renewable energy of all types and ability to communicate clearly and effectively to a wide audience: clients and the public. Prior experiences with the following helpful:
  • Hands-on engineering projects where devices must be designed built and tested.
  • Prior modeling/simulation experience with regard to energy flows or energy efficiency in transportation-related environments.
  • Student research and design projects in direct collaboration with industry or government.
  • Internships or work experience transportation-oriented corporations, etc.

Compensation:
The Intern will receive a monthly stipend and employee housing.

Duration: 6 months to a year to start in June 2007.
