** Two positions available. **
RMI's Energy & Resources Team (ERT) is seeking two candidates interested in working with our Energy & Resources Team on the Utility Industry, Climate Change Strategy, and the Next Generation Utility.
Research Project #1: Transformation of the Utility Industry and Climate Change Strategy
Rocky Mountain Institute is engaged with a series of utilities and businesses across the country to apply new planning processes to demonstrate the economic reliability and environmental value of distributed resources and renewable energy. Our goal is to transform the way the electric utility industry operates, fundamentally shifting from the centralized power plant business model to a more distributed, efficient, secure, and resilient system. The work involves modeling, economic analysis and policy and regulatory considerations.
The Rocky Mountain Institute has two projects in this area that the intern would be assigned to:
- State of the art integrated resource planning (ERIS) for public or private utilities;
- Carbon strategy and management approaches for public or private utilities.
Responsibilities:
- The intern's work experiences will include analyzing utility systems and distributed power resources; performing economic and risk analyses; preparing comments and testimony for public and private decision-makers; working in a collaborative process with utilities, NGOs, and state regulators; and working with senior staff at RMI;
- Develop recommendations to senior executives on the value of distributed and renewable power resources;
- Assist in efforts to promote the development of distributed power and energy efficiency;
- Develop quantitative analyses regarding the value of distributed resources on utility systems to lower costs and improve reliability.
Research Project #2: Next Generation Utility Project
Advances in technology, concern about climate change, increasing customer demands, and increased regulatory uncertainly all point to the need for dramatic changes in the electric utility industry in the next decade or so. However, although many technologies and regulatory approaches have been promoted by various analysts or advocates, to date no one has put together a cohesive vision for where these changes are leading us.
RMI is undertaking a 3-year effort to see how advanced technologies like distributed resources, dramatic efficiency gains, and advanced digital communications could produce a new type of utility. Our efforts will focus on de-emphasizing the current paradigm of central generation and transmission, in favor of more localized resources that are intimately linked together, and more focused on delivering services than on simply generating power.
Responsibilities:
An intern working on the next generation utility project would be performing research and quantitative analysis related to one of the following or related areas: demand response/smart grid infrastructure; the interaction between plug-in hybrids and the grid; and potential power trading regimes under future regulatory conditions.
Qualifications (for both projects):
Graduate level studies concentrating in business/economics or engineering (either mechanical or electrical) preferred. Environmental policy and law background welcome as long as the candidate has an extremely strong analytical/quantitative background. Strong writing and oral communications skills, analytical abilities, experience in team-based work, and demonstrated commitment to issues of sustainability and resource efficiency.
Compensation:
The Intern will receive a monthly stipend and housing assistance.
Location: Boulder, Colorado.
Duration: Three months to start in May 2007.
How to apply:
Please send a cover letter, resume, transcripts, two letters of reference, and a two-page self-edited writing sample (Word or PDF documents) describing your interests and why you would be an outstanding candidate. Please indicate "ERT INTERN" on the envelope.
