Internships

RMI offers three-month to one-year internships, depending on the needs of the project and the funding available. Any of the departments at RMI may request funding for a project-related internship at any time during the calendar year. Competition for these positions is intense. In most cases, candidates will be required to have at least a BA or BS, be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal and communications skills, have broad interest in environmental and resource policy issues, and have a desire to apply these interests to practical, real-life situations. Related work experience is a plus. Interns are expected to be self-motivated and require minimal supervision. Applicants must be able to function effectively in an unusual work environment, including flexible work hours and a communal work area.

Duties and activities of our interns will vary with the project needs and the intern's ability and interests. Responsibilities may include research and writing, technical analysis, general office work (responding to information requests, maintaining the library and resource files and databases, copying, etc.), giving tours, or work on the RMI physical facility (upkeep of the communal kitchen, grounds, greenhouse, etc.).

RMI has two offices — in Boulder, Colorado and in Snowmass, Colorado. RMI's Boulder offices are located in downtown Boulder, and have excellent access to local amenities, services, and public transportation. RMI's Snowmass offices are in a rural area 180 miles southwest of Denver, 25 miles from I-70 and twelve miles from the Aspen airport. The nearest public transportation is 2.5 miles away and the area has limited amenities and services.

Internship: RMI Energy & Resources Team
RMI's Energy & Resources Team (ERT) is seeking two candidates interested in working with our Energy & Resources Team on the Utility Industry, Climate Change Strategy, and the Next Generation Utility. RMI is engaged with a series of utilities and businesses across the country to apply new planning processes to demonstrate the economic reliability and environmental value of distributed resources and renewable energy. Our goal is to transform the way the electric utility industry operates, fundamentally shifting from the centralized power plant business model to a more distributed, efficient, secure, and resilient system. The work involves modeling, economic analysis and policy and regulatory considerations.

Internship: RMI Breakthrough Design Team
RMI's Breakthrough Design Team (BDT) looks comprehensively at critical operations to show our clients creative new ways to turn waste into profits. We closely examine everything you do—from the most basic aspects of a business model, facility, or product to the most complex industrial process details—to identify the synergies that connect seemingly unrelated functions. We design integrated solutions that address an array of energy, resource and business-related challenges at once, at modest extra cost—indeed, often at lower capital cost because simpler, leaner designs can make some equipment smaller or unnecessary.

Internship: Winning the Oil Endgame Implementation
In September 2004, Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) published Winning the Oil Endgame: Innovation for Profits, Jobs, and Security, a Pentagon co-funded blueprint for making the United States oil-free. The plan outlines how American industry can restore competitiveness and boost profits by mobilizing modern technologies and smart business strategies to displace oil more cheaply than buying it. Implementation of this study is well underway in the areas of heavy trucks, military, light vehicles, and biofuels. It requires a combination of business and military-led initiatives in producing more efficient vehicles and creating cost-competitive biofuels, combined with targeted policies to provide incentives for both producers and consumers. In 2007, RMI will continue to engage federal and state regulators, along with business leaders, to further implement the recommendations proposed in this study.

Thanks to our Sponsors
RMI is deeply grateful to several generous individuals and families who share our vision for developing a new generation of leaders. Their financial sponsorhip allows us to offer a wide variety of internships of varying lengths. In particular we wish to thank the following internship sponsors:

The Argosy Foundation Whole-Systems Fellowship offers a special opportunity for Colorado students and graduates interested in internships of up to six months. The Argosy Fellowship was created to celebrate the achievement and leadership of a currently enrolled student or recent graduate of a Colorado college or university who is committed to stewarding the earth and its resources. The Argosy Foundation is particularly interested in applicants for RMI internships who excel at systems thinking that draws on multiple disciplines to solve complex problems. If an RMI internship applicant qualifies to become this year's Argosy Fellow, that person's internship will be fully supported by the Argosy Foundation. The Fellow will also be encouraged to share his or her accomplishments with other students and young environmental leaders, becoming part of a growing network of Argosy Fellows from Colorado.

The John and Mary Frantz Internship is supported with generous gifts in memory of Margaret Frantz, by her parents, John and Mary. Margaret was active in Boulder Ecocycle and lived her life as an example of minimal consumption. After a six-month battle with lymphoma, she died in 1989.

The Eric Konheim Memorial Fund for Resource Preservation was created in memory of Eric Konheim, who was a strong advocate of RMI's work before he lost his life in a 1991 kayaking accident. The fund is supported by contributions from Konheim family members, and their friends and associates.

The Phillip Austin Semmer Memorial Rocky Mountain Institute Internship Fund was established permanently by the family and friends of Phillip Semmer, a Northwestern University college student who was killed in an automobile accident while vacationing in Australia in summer 2000. Phillip had told his parents shortly before he was killed that his dream after graduating from college was to serve as an intern at RMI. Interest generated from the investment of the Fund covers the costs of a three-month internship at RMI each year.

The Stanback Internship Program was established by Fred and Alice Stanback to provide students at Duke University with significant work experience in grassroots conservation, advocacy, applied resource management and/or environmental policy. The program is a partnership between the Nicholas School and selected conservation organizations. The program is open to all continuing (i.e. non-graduating) Duke students, but the majority of intern candidates come from the Nicholas School pursuing the degree of Master of Environmental Management (MEM) or Master of Forestry (MF). The MEM and MF degree programs stress interdisciplinary approaches to environmental problem solving. They train students to understand the scientific basis of environmental problems, as well as the social, political and economic factors that determine effective policy options for their solution.
