Internship:
Winning the Oil Endgame Implementation

In September 2004, Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) published Winning the Oil Endgame: Innovation for Profits, Jobs, and Security, a Pentagon co-funded blueprint for making the United States oil-free (www.oilendgame.com). The plan outlines how American industry can restore competitiveness and boost profits by mobilizing modern technologies and smart business strategies to displace oil more cheaply than buying it. Implementation of this study is well underway in the areas of heavy trucks, military, light vehicles, and biofuels. It requires a combination of business and military-led initiatives in producing more efficient vehicles and creating cost-competitive biofuels, combined with targeted policies to provide incentives for both producers and consumers. In 2007, RMI will continue to engage federal and state regulators, along with business leaders, to further implement the recommendations proposed in this study.

Responsibilities:
The intern's work experiences will include analyzing proposed policies, legislation, and rules; preparing comments and testimony for decision-makers; working with a coalition of business leaders, NGOs, and state regulators; and working with senior staff at RMI. The intern will assist RMI staff in implementing a selected number of the activities below:
  • Research key barriers to implementation in the light vehicle, biofuel, heavy trucking, and military sectors. Assist in development and dissemination of research white papers;
  • Develop recommendations to state leaders on policies for oil dependency, including transportation efficiency and biofuels initiatives;
  • Assist in legislative education efforts to promote the development of transportation energy efficiency and biofuels
  • Develop business cases for industry regarding the rationale for investment in production capacity to build more efficient cars and trucks, or the advanced materials necessary for their construction
  • Interact with consortium of public, private and non profit groups.

Qualifications:
Graduate level studies concentrating in any of the following: business/economics, engineering, environmental policy, and law. Strong writing and oral communications skills, analytical abilities, experience in team-based work, and demonstrated commitment to issues of sustainability and resource efficiency. Engineering, real-world experience in the energy sector, specific background in policy making and/or auto industry highly preferred.

Compensation:
The Intern will receive a monthly stipend of $1100.00 and housing assistance.

Duration: 3 months to 6 months to start in June.

Location: Snowmass, Colorado
